Sarina’s Parisian Nights- In Sydney!

SarinaBackstage encounters can lead to lovely discoveries. Recently backstage at The Curtain variety show, a belle brunette asked me if she could borrow a glove as she seemed to be missing one and was about to go on stage (as the headliner no less). One doesn’t lend new fitted black gloves to just anyone- but she seemed nice and I obliged. When she returned it, it was with an invitation to perform (not just because of the glove one assumes) at her weekly cabaret.

I popped into The Art Lounge a week later and there was Sarina del Fuego in all her sultry glory. Seeing her perform and now in her own space, her charms became evident- a sauciness that is not without a touch of humour; a glamour that is handsomely coupled with warmth and an approachability. I was intrigued to find out a little more about Sarina and her Parisian Nights.

What is the story behind Parisian Nights at the Art Lounge?

The Art Lounge is a big supporter of the Arts and when owner Karim (Gharbi) and I met, we instantly connected and wanted to create a night of free cabaret and burlesque. Each Thursday, we are inspired by French elegance and have created a stylish but fun atmosphere where people can come to meet and enjoy tapas and cocktails.

What do you like about these nights?

Parisian Nights has become home- it feels welcoming for performers and guests. Myself and fellow performers get to entertain a gorgeous array of people while we enjoy gorgeous cocktails and food.

The Art Lounge is like a Supper Club which is perfect for intimate performance. The French Louis XIV decor is an added bonus. The other enjoyment on a Thursday night is that artists (and the rest of us) get to draw a gorgeous costumed model from 6-830pm as part of ‘Figure It In’. It starts the Thursday night off to a great setting!

What elements for you make good cabaret/burlesque?

Shows that become interactive with audiences without interfering with their enjoyment of conversation, food and wine; a visual treat audiences will forever remember;  a great costume, storyline and feeling.  These elements all create great cabaret/burlesque.

Who are a couple of your inspirations and why?

Audrey Hepburn, Monica Bellucci, Lola LaBelle- all for their beauty, style and elegance. I am inspired by their creativity, talent and not being afraid of a challenge.

Can you share two of your career highlights to date?

1. Performing with La Clique on my birthday, I think it was the most wonderful cabaret show in the world and a chance to be a part of that was a highlight for me and can’t wait to see the new La Soiree in London.

2. Directing and producing Noir Revue for Sydney Fringe and Adelaide Fringe. The show came together so easily, I was blessed with my cast and crew and receiving such amazing and positive reviews from both seasons was wonderful.

What do you like most about hosting an evening?

Showing off others’ talent. When you choose your entertainers you have the control of the standard you create. Every performer I work with I am so proud of and would recommend them on and off stage for their creativity, talent and professionalism.

What is on the program for the next fews weeks why should people come down?

Parisian Nights you never know who might pop in. We have our resident guests who are always amazing but our surprise guests can be anything from famous Italian Opera singers to gorgeous petite tap dancers to magicians with some up close and personal treats. An update on who you can expect each Thursday is listed on the Facebook page.

What are your plans for the rest of 2011?
