Landing in Paris tomorrow, one of America’s best tap dancers, Omar Edwards, will continue where he left off- giving intensive tap dance classes (both basic and advanced levels that manage to be both delightfully exhausting and rejuvenating) and working with his cast and crew on a re-staging of his devised show The Passion of Tap which will be playing at the renowned Café de la Dance in Bastille, with a potential tour.
If you want to get your eyes or ears on Omar and not in Paris, there are several options including his audio CD ‘Tap Dancin’ is Music’ and DVD ‘Sidewalks of New York’. The album boats a diversity of styles with Omar on tap and his jazz outfit (drums, keys, strings, bass) swinging in jazz, striking Beethoven, playing with a music box and punching out a Tango to close the album. The DVD ‘The Sidewalks of New York’ shot by Masahi Fujimura and edited by Teri Tenseth has a cover that says it all- Omar with hat in one hand, white taps flung over a shoulder and a T shirt that reads I AM (inside the heart) New York, on sidewalk gazing ahead. It is a moody, basic production quality voyage into the life of this Harlem tapper… paying tribute to the tappers of the past, inviting the viewer into candlelit studio sessions, back entrances to NY jazz clubs with the underground trip there and back. A day in the life of feel. Contact via Harlem Tap Studio.
It must be said however that Omar is at his best when live, so do keep updated her for the October classes and December show… Classes and production through the L’ATELIER 10, rue du Cygne 75001 PARIS Métro : Etienne Marcel (ligne 4), Paris : + 33 1 42 33 53 99.
