Festivals Venice

Lido finally more buzzy and sunny for the ceremony… after a needed nap!

Last day Venice

An exhausted Australian journalist

The final day of the 67th Venice International film festival has turned out blue skies, breathless filmmakers and exhausted journalists.

The locals and regulars agree that the 2010 festival has been less buzzy than previous years…smaller crowds, fewer major stars, torrential rain (a lion toppled and I had to  swim to my first TV itv) and scaled down parties.  So when Quintin Tarantino (heading the jury) attended screenings without body guards he got gently mobbed… and when the Indian film’s cast and crew let loose on the dance floor at Style Star, the Italian TV sponsors and special guests (needing excitement to compliment the pink champagne and Cirque du Soleil contortionist act) were delighted… particularly those that had seen the film…

That Girl in the Yellow Boots (trailer below)  is a brave, vivid and  touching Indian film that has nothing to do with Bollywood and which was apparently finished too late to be in competition which is a shame… however it will shortly be heading to Toronto where it will be (Katrina Sedgwick- you should see it).

Word from the press office is that Post Mortom, Venus Noire and Drei could be up for a lion. I reckon Balada Triste de Trompeta could grab a prize (Tarantino gave it ten min standing ovation), since I seem to be the only one who liked Miral, that probably won’t… and The Ditch and Pot iche have had good reception…unlike the Lynchesque Road to Nowhere which the critics sitting around me loved to hate the performances… Sofia Coppola has also been the talk of the town…

But enough speculation… am off to the swimming pool area of The Excelsior to film the Italian film crews and find out what the jury thought…  then discuss it at a cocktail with Melissa, a gorgeous Australian presenter for ‘Pure’ Italian TV.
