From 17th-25th May, the French Riviera sparkled as global stars, industry heavies, events organiser and cinephiles attended the 75th Festival de Cannes . After a cancelled 2020 and reduced 2021 festival, the event was back to its glorified self. Twenty one films competed in the official selection and hundreds of others screening in various other sections as well as market screenings.
Crowds were thrilled with the presence of the likes of Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Kylie Minogue, Marion Cottiard, Lea Sedoux and other talent. Baz Luhmann and Catherine Martin wowed audiences and press with the biopic Elvis. George Miller charmed with his romantic and poetic 3000 Years of Longing. Virginie Efira glowed as mistress of ceremonies for the opening and closing ceremonies.
The strong Algerian presence included director Rachid Bouchareb and actors Reda Kateb, Tahar Rahim, Lyna Koudri, Sami Guesmi, Karim Leklou, Mohamed Mouffok, Abdelkader Hoggui, Kader Mazidi, Théo Cholbi, Omar Boulakerba and Ahmed Benaissa’s who’s profound role in the masterpiece Goutte D’Or and passing on the same day was both shocking and mystical- a powerful, real disappearing act. RIP Ahmed- your brilliant, refined talent and kindness will never be forgotten.
Parties, events, networking, swims, and lots of cinema talk were shared by all and the power of cinema to bring people together and widen perspectives was evident and heart warming. Rendez vous on Lalla TV and Ruby TV for all the interviews, stories, backstage antics and more.
A bientôt! ( ou ‘à rodwa inchallah’ as we say in Algeria!)
