At the udderbelly, The Tom Tom Crew are currently scratching, beatboxing, drumming and flipping their way into the pulses of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival audiences. Directed by Scott Maidment and produced by Strut and Fret, the high energy production features DJ Sampology, percussionist Ben Walsh, graduates of the Flying Fruit Fly Cirucs (Daniel Catlow, Shane Witt and J Macca), gymnast Karl Stock and the talented and charismatic beat box boy Tom Thum. The show is designed to feel like an explosive music and movement jam and the audience are given good attention and guidelines to allow us to best enjoy the experience. The philosophy behind the performers is clear and luminous- these are not artists seeking perfection but who appear free to experiment and play, and in doing so, go so much further and don’t forget to also have fun. Witnessing their ensemble work, support of each other across disciplines, clear focus and license to sometimes slip (‘oops that didn’t work’ says Tom Thum between beats and tune- we hadn’t noticed but this allows us to like him all the more) rubs off on the audience who scream, laugh and gasp in all the right places plus more. Tom Tom Crew are playing at the Edinburgh Fringe until August 31.
