Brisbane’s Circa receives standing ovation at Edinburgh Fringe

Contemporary dance, circus and a splash of theatrics seamlessly combine in the work of Brisbane based Circa ( with Rock n Roll Circus’ Yaron Lifschitz in artistic direction).

A young cast of seven seemingly defy gravity in tightly choreographed spins, leaps and acrobatic sequences punctuated with softer formations and comic moments. It is strong ensemble work that is both meditative and dynamic. Cast are Chelsea McGuffin, David Carberry, Jesse Scott,
Emma Serjeant, Lewis West, Lachlan McAulay and Freyja Edney.

Sets and costumes are simple with the use of beautiful lighting and silhouettes, tissue and a pair of red heels that provide the point of metaphor for the themes of couples and love; play and trust.

There is no literal plot thus suspense but it is a show where meaning is rather threaded through emotionally charged images. The performers impress on us the limitless ways in which we can use our bodies but mostly don’t.

The quite full 850 seater venue showed their awe with a standing ovation.

Circa plays at Assembly on the mound until August 31, Edinburgh Fringe.
