The Supper Club

The Supper Club is the late night cabaret during the Edinburgh Fringe at the Assembly Rooms. The hosts and guests, most with shows of their own at the Fringe, vary. Last night the club was in the capable hands, or rather voice, of the famous Ali McGregor (who produces and hosts Ali McGregor’s Late NightVariety Nite Night).

Ali charmed the audience with a few astounding renditions with her trade mark sexy witty tones, dead pan humour and ‘orgasmic’ upper range. On stage she is instantly likable with her charisma, talent, wit and warmth. And she makes it all look easy, which is a difficult thing.

The first act is the divine Dusty Limits (host of the Bongo Cabaret Club) who serves a meta-theatrical cabaret chair dance in a corset, his rendion of ‘the 12 days of..’ (Edinburgh!) that has the audience choking on their drinks with knowing laughter. He  finishes with a bottle and a mock. It is all lapped up.

Keeping the Australian line-up  (Dusty may have an English accent but the man behind the diva grew up inOz) This Side Up impressed all, notably Dusty whose fan flapped furiously from his stage left off stage position and the round bellied Englishmen behind us who were gobsmacked. Yanni’s picture says it all really. They perform ‘Controlled Falling Project’ at Udderbelly 3:50pm until August 31.

Closing the night was Italian acoutsic guitarist Antonio Forcione who captured our imagination best in his last number with an original. His show Al Dente is playing until August 29.

The cabaret set up, hot acts and vibrant host create a Supper Club that is a wonderful late night option, especially with the attached performers’ bar open to the audience after the show for a drink and a mingle.
