On her 11th trip to the Festival de Cannes, Paris based Australian writer/director Elise McLeod confirms that anyone who’s anyone in film is here- including one of her favourite French actress Juliette Binoche with whom she managed a chat. As an esteemed acting coach, Elise gives us her criteria for a great performance and applauds Kristen Stewart’s craft in ‘Personal Shopper’.
1. How many times have you been to Cannes and for what reasons?
I’ve been 11 times now and for work- it’s the best place to see films, the magic of the Palme d’Or logo and the music and the steps…. it makes me dream. Everyone who is anyone in film is in Cannes, the accidental meeting, ‘la folie’, the opportunities and fun.
2 What do you think of/feel when you think of this festival?
The great films in all their diversity, the chance to see something that changes your perspective, moves you and takes you an a journey. You can discover great films in Cannes.
3. Tell me about your recent film and upcoming projects?
Fish & Chicks is a short film (18 mins)- a prelude to my feature film with Julie Grumbach. It will have it’s world premiere on opening night at the SOHO International Film Festival in June.
4.What have been the highlights in the films you’ve seen and people you’ve met?
I met the producer of Underground which won the palme d’or in 1995 and I had a short conversation with one of my favorite French actresses- Juliette Binoche!
5.As an acting coach, what are the top elements that make a good film actor and what has been the best performance you’ve seen this festival?
Hard work, going to the edge – taking risks and having fun.
